Brassy hair, it happens to the best of us! How do you fix a brassy color? You can do it yourself by consistently washing your hair with a blue/purple based shampoo. If you want to leave it to the professionals, ask about a toner which will deposit color to counteract the brassiness. When dark hair is lifted to light it also can become orange. The hair color needs to be lifted to the right shade just before the highlighting are added. You should always lift the base to the perfect color before highlighting to avoid that orange/brass look.

Yellow hair can occur from new highlights that cause hair to look neon or yellow. “To prevent that neon yellow color, your colorist needs to put on a toner and a glaze. It also prevents the color from continuing to process,” says Vo.

Is your color too light? Excessive highlighting can definitely make your color too light. A common mistake is to do highlights every single time you get your hair done. Color that is too light can be fixed by using a toner or glaze. Also, lowlights are the perfect way to break up and deepen the color.

Sometimes hair can appear too dark after you have it colored. If hair color was not two shades within your natural color than it may appear to dark. Excess pigment needs to be removed before anything; do this by continuously washing your hair. Highlighting can give dark hair a softer look as well.
